8/9/2008 Assessment of Cleanup Efforts at Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (Northwest Hawaiian Island Chain) In June 2006, President Bush declared a remote chain of Hawaiian Islands the biggest, most environmentally protected area of ocean in the world -- Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

8/9/08 Molly Schmidt – Coordinator of the Legacy Land Conservation Program. Molly Schmidt’s love for the environment developed at an early age during camping trips in the backwoods of Wisconsin.  Her father’s naturalist view of the world further inspired and cultivated her passion for nature.

7/8/2008 The conservation tax credit bill (SB 2198), which was ably shepherded through the state legislature by The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i, was vetoed by Governor Lingle. Read about the bill, including the Governor’s veto message.

7/30/08 Molokai Land Trust (MLT) hires its first Executive Director, Butch Haase Butch Haase attended UH Manoa in the 1990’s and lived on east end Molokai. It was here he started a permaculture garden in Honomuni Valley. His vision was propagating native plants and he fundraised, planned, and started the native plants project in Kauluwai, Molokai. Butch moved to Washington State and finished his education at Washington State with a B.S. in Hydrogeology and Forest Ecology. After graduating, he started his own successful landscaping business. However, his ties to Molokai brought him back each year to volunteer at the native plant project. Now Butch is back on Molokai full time to help preserve the essence of Molokai as executive director of MLT.

6/26/2008 New Fence Protects Unique Ecosystem of the Kanaele Bog The Nature Conservancy of Hawai‘i recently completed construction of a protective fence around the Kanaele Bog in the mountains of south Kaua‘i. At 2,100 feet above sea level, Kanaele is the only remaining low-elevation bog in the Hawaiian Islands and contains many rare and endangered plant species. 6/16/08 Molokai Land Trust (MLT) hires its first Field Coordinator, Clayton English Clayton English is a native Hawaiian, born and raised on Molokai. He worked on Oahu with an arborist company and then joined Molokai Ranch as supervisor of landscaping. A subsistence practitioner and homestead farmer, Clayton is intimately familiar with the lands of Molokai and brings his wealth of knowledge and love of the Molokai aina to MLT.

What are some of the actions a land trust can take to avoid merger of interest, thereby potentially extinguishing a conservation easement? [Editor’s note: the merger doctrine varies from state to state] (7/08)

4/14/2008 Land Conservation Incentives Tax Credit Bill The Hawaii State Legislature introduced a conservation tax credit bill for the 2008 session. The bill would encourage the preservation and protection of land in Hawaii by providing state incentives in addition to existing federal incentives.
